Rx: Curule chair with pillow between lituus and wreath; above, SVLLA CO[S] across field; below, on tablet, Q POMPEI RVF. Crawford 434/2. Sydenham 909. RSC Pompeia 5. EF.
Ex Berk 166, 15 October 2009, lot 270.
The moneyer commemorates Q. Pomponius Rufus, his paternal grandfather, and Sulla, his maternal grandfather, who were consuls together in 88 BC. According to Crawford, the arrow and laurel branch on the obverse, attributes of Apollo, suggest that Q. Pomponius Rufus was Xvvir s.f., while the lituus and wreath on the reverse prove that Sulla must have been augur.
