Bruttium, The Brettii (?). Hannibal. c. 215-209 BC. Quarter Shekel, 1.97gg. (12h). Obv: Head of Tanit-Demeter left, wreathed with grain, wearing pendant earring and necklace. Rx: Free horse standing right. Robinson, NC 1964, p. 53, 3. SNG Copenhagen 369. HN Italy 2020. Head of horse slightly off center, as usual for this issue. Mint State.
Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Ex Berk 123, 6 November 2001, lot 84.
Robinson gave coins of this type to Locri, but no evidence has emerged supporting the existence of a Punic mint at that city. HN Italy tentatively suggests attribution to the Brettii. Hoard evidence indicates that the variety circulated at Tarentum, establishing a date of issue before 209.
